Mowing

Countless turtles are killed accidentally each year by mowers. While we can’t help prevent roadside mower deaths, there are steps we can take to help prevent individual mowing accidents.

1)       Mow during the hottest part of the day. Box Turtles are more active in morning and evening hours. They will be dug down in the heat of the day

2)       Mow more often. Don’t let grass grow so high where it will appeal to Box Turtles as a shelter.

3)        Patrol before you mow. Looking around for Box Turtles is a sure bet for safe mowing.

4)       Get goats or sheep. Goats will clear brush and briars, while sheep will graze the grass.
